The thought of posting a blog of my own had been milling around in my head for quite a long time now. What prevented me I guess was good old procrastination and his fat friend laziness. Funny thing, people generally tend to associate laziness and slumber with men of girth(or is it the other way round?) and potbellies(kumbhkaran, hardy, sharad pawar??). Not fair I tell you. We good looking, adipose-tissue-challenged, athletic dudes too tend to spend that extra couple of hours on the bed! And I must confess, it's one of the most divine things that nature has bestowed upon us. The feeling of languid detachment.. not having to open your eyes and blink those damn eyelids mozillion times a day.. bliss.. aaahhh. Insomniacs, I pity you. Morning joggers, I pity you too.
Anyways, what woke me up from the slumber was an article on blogs that I had read a few days back. The number of blogs has reached 10million. TEN MILLION! That's some figure. Wonder what they all write about. Me, I have no clue. I really feel sorry for you guys out there who are reading this right now cos I have no idea what the next line's gonna be. It's all nonsense and random and .. er.. random nonsense (i.e if u haven't already guessed!)
Update: seems ten million is the number of active blogs. real figure is just 200mil.
Now that I've given away the underlying theme and purpose of this blog, we might as well get going. Yet another year has gone by but not without leaving a lot of memories. Iraq dominated the international news once again with no end in sight whereas Afghanistan seems to be making a comeback.. and not for the right reasons. North Korea added some more masala to the khichdi that is the global political scenario. Can anyone remember what all that ruckus about the Office of Profit thing was?
It doesn't get easy for the Indian police and the judicial system does it? Just when they start to think that the demons of Jessica Lal and Priyadarshani Mattoo have been exorcised, along comes an even more complex and horrific case.
Onto the ever slippery moral grounds.. Buddhia Singh kicked up a lot of dust with his running. Or was it the news channels? Lots of people were terribly disappointed when their search string 'Steve Irwin death video' returned zero results on youtube. But then, Saddam came to the rescue. Maybe we should have a stand alone channel called K-TV that broadcasts live from the various penitentiaries around the world. K as in 'kaput' not 'kahaani zindagi ki' or 'kasauti ghar ghar ki'. But then again...
What a crazy year it was. Deja vu? 'Britney Spears is pregnant again' received more clicks than 'Israeli planes bomb Beirut!' B for Bollywood, B for box office, B also for bombed.. yet again. Apart from Lage Raho, Omkara and a pre-interval Rang de Basanti, all the blockbusters turned out to be duds. B for Business, B for Buffet... B for billions!! Google buys YouTube for a few quid. Steve Jobs comes out with some very impressive numbers for Apple. B for Bombay Stock Exchange? Yea, baby!
What a year for sports though. Whoever thought dada would return to the first XI??(apart from a few million in Kolkata i.e). F1 without Schumi and tennis without a certain bald guy with earrings?? But then, sports always has the knack of replacing icons.. so unlike Indian politics. Another legend also retired, but not without a bang! Zinedine Zidane left us with one of the most incredulous and memorable images in sport history. Way to go Zizou!! Should have knocked over the entire Italian team so that they'd be left without any penalty takers in my opinion!
Whew.. Some year eh?
On a more personal front, 2006 was a sad year. When someone close to your heart leaves you forever, you wonder at the cruelty of life. Miss you tatagaru.
I was positively alarmed to realize that atleast 25% of my life is in the past tense and I'm only gonna get older! But looking on the brighter side, I'm finally past the legal age for drinking, gambling and *ahem* a few other things in almost all the countries. Friends come and friends go.. and then there are friends that remain forever. Thanks for all the wonderful memories guys!
So.. what were you upto on new year's eve? Broken your resolutions yet?
